What is Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) is an organic product comprised of tiny fossilized water plants. Diatomaceous Earth is a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary mineral compound from microscopic skeletal remains of unicellular algae-like plants, called diatoms. These remains of microscopic one-celled plants (phytoplankton), diatoms, once lived in the oceans and lakes that covered the western part of the US and other parts of the world.

The diatoms are mined and ground up to render a fine powder. While it feels like a fine, soft powder to humans, it is composed of millions of tiny, jagged edges that spell doom for a wide variety of garden trouble-makers.

The composition of D.E. DE is approximately 3% magnesium, 33% silicon, 19% calcium, 5% sodium, 2% iron and many other trace minerals such as titanium, boron, manganese, copper and zirconium.

It is 100% non-toxic, no chemicals, all-natural product. D.E. is odor free, tasteless, and has an indefinite shelf life if kept dry.

How is it used?

Diatomaceous Earth (food grade) is commonly used for multifunctional purposes: natural wormer, insecticide and parasite control.

Insecticide: Fleas, ticks, lice, roaches, silverfish, ants, bedbugs, flies, fleas, box elder bugs, crickets and numerous other insects.

Parasite Control: Lightly rub D.E. into your animal’s coating/fur/feathers to defend against parasites and worms.

Natural Wormer: A suggested feeding, a rate of 2% of the dry weight, in your livestock’s food will provide an offensive assault upon the parasites and worms.
